]]> As a woman-owned business, TDM Design Inc. which designs and imports handwoven, dyed and sometimes ruched silk, bamboo and merino wool scarves from Nepal, strongly supports women working together in cottage industries. Nepal is one of the poorest, least developed countries in the world with an unemployement rate of nearly 50% and a per capita income of less than $300. TDM promotes economic empowerment of women in Nepal.

The Nepalese live their art. Rather than being viewed from a distance, art is an inherent part of their daily environment. In annual visits to this part of the world, TDM sees first hand the affect of the above-standard pay the women weavers receive from their company. With the ability to manage their own incomes, these women are able to better care for their children’s health and education. TDM now provides medical care to 125 children and is looking to make an even bigger mark on Nepal. Their goal is to eventually build a school.

In order to deliver the ultimate in luxury, TDM only uses the highest quality natural fibers in their scarves which by the way, will be available in the spring in stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Scoop, and Henri Bendel. Their cashmere is known as “diamond-fiber cashmere” – a true cashmere with long, white fibers that are combed from the under belly and under the neck of the caprus hircus goat. Their dyes are environmentally safe Azo-free dyes. In addition to scarves, TDM is now expanding into wraps and small knit accessories.

We received the Starry Night Masino Due Scarf in Purple Magic from TDM’s Spring/Summer 2009 Masino Due Collection. Pictured is the Water Masino Due Scarf in Ochre. Both are in jewel tones perfect for the upcoming holiday season and retail for $140. These scarves are handmade and hand-dyed silk chiffon with felted designs. They are available in 52 colors and 4 designs.

In a word, the Masino Due Scarf is heavenly! The fabric, the design, the workmanship – all of the highest quality. The felting is not only stylish, it’s distinctive. The bits of felt woven along the length of the fabric create a unique and exclusive look that projects class and luxury. I adore it so much, I work my ensembles around it - one little accessory breathing such new life to my entire wardrobe. It’s absolutely gorgeous, fabulous, and worth every penny.

Speaking of pennies, everyone’s pinching these days due to this massive downturn we’re all in the middle of. If you’re attending holiday parties this year, a good way to save would be to wear an old outfit and freshen it up with a new accessory. This scarf is large enough to be worn as a shawl. Rather than buy a new outfit, wear one of your old little black dresses and use this scarf as a wrap. It’s super chic, elegant, and way less than what you would spend on an entirely new ‘fit.

We received the Playful Sunwear in Tortoise, the Triangle Case in Grey, and the Teardrop Tort Zia. The sunwear is made from the highest quality components, is UV 400 protected, and retails for $75. The case is cross-functional as an evening purse or a make-up case. It retails for $18. The zia is also cross-functional as a necklace or as an alternative way to hold your glasses. It retails for $45.

Très chic, what a set!

Starting off with the sunwear - absolutely adorable! The shape is stylish and modern, but not trendy. It has classic lines and an exceptional construction that makes it look a whole lot more expensive than its retail price of $75. Most notably, the temples close up snugly so they stay put when you hang them off your neckline. How many times have you gone to the little girl’s room, only to have your sunglasses fall onto the floor as you’re bending down? I have a pair of Marc Jacobs that never fails to do that. Surprisingly, the much more affordable Cinzia doesn’t.

The case, at $18 is a steal. It’s way too pretty to simply store glasses in, and be stashed away in one’s purse. No, this one’s not for hiding, it’s definitely for showing. If you’re one to track celebrity trends, you’ll know that tiny little purses are so in right now. It’s the perfect evening accessory, just large enough to hold in the palm of your hands. It doesn’t hold much, but when is function ever the point when it comes to fashion?

Speaking of function, the zia is an embodiment of that. First, it’s a necklace. Second, it’s a hanger for your glasses! Each zia is hand-beaded and designed with an open pendant enabling you to hang your glasses in a really chic way. I just love it, especially when I’m wearing a round neckline. Don’t you just hate it when you hang your glasses on a round neckline and it turns it into a V neckline? You know what else is cool? The magnetized closure, it just snaps in place – no fiddling with clasps whatsoever. I’m still quite nimble so I don’t have a problem with clasps but if you can use some help in that department, this is a good way to go.

So, what to wear with these gorgeous pieces? The weather is cooling down so a nice long white wool jacket with tortoise buttons and a bootcut pair of jeans will make for a fabulous ensemble.

We received the Sterling Silver Rose Quartz-Drops Earrings and the Sterling Silver Cable Bracelet with Floral Shaped Charm. Measuring in at 1.5”, the earring has 8 rose quartz-drops that dangle from a sterling silver wire. It’s designed in India and retails for $50. At 7.5” in length (adjustable), the bracelet is made of three strands of sterling silver cable with a floral-shaped charm at its center. It is designed in Indonesia and retails for $100.

The bracelet is absolutely gorgeous. Without fail, I receive compliments on it every time I wear it. It’s a very feminine piece, dainty, elegant, and has sort of a vintage look to it. It’s also a very classic piece, truly seasonless, and one that will go well with practically anything you wish to wear with it. The strand of silver cable is undeniably chic and pairs up fabulously with the charm at its center. The charm, with its intricate openwork is simply beautiful. I love looking at it and so do other women, it registers high on the adoration meter. If you’re looking to spend on a sterling silver bracelet that you’ll be able to wear year after year after year, I would recommend you take a look at this one. You’ll be happy you did.

The earring is effortless elegance defined. The quartz-drops give off a sparkle that is more understated than flashy. Evening is my pet time to wear it because of the ways in which light catches the sparkle of its movement. I love to wear it with the cable bracelet, paired with a little black dress (check out these gorgeous LBDs by Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent - Ruffle Dress and 'Waisted' Slipdress). It creates a look that is polished and effortlessly chic.

]]> A socially and environmentally responsible company, Mad Imports markets handmade fashion accessories from Madagascar and Kenya. Their eclectic accessories blend the traditional and contemporary design ideas of their international design team who incorporates renewable raw materials to create vivid and original clutches, totes and shoulder bags.

Launched in 2003 as an outgrowth of a Madagascar-based development project started by Laurel Brandstetter’s relative, Mad Imports enables families to gain economic independence and promotes environmental conservation through the sale of their products. With Laurel’s background in community development, urban planning and volunteer public health work, she realized an opportunity to reduce poverty and improve the quality of life in local communities through the sale of handmade products.

In 2004, New York based designer, Jamila Hubbard, joined Mad Imports as a fashion designer and marketing associate. She studied fashion design at FIDM in San Francisco and FIT in New York. Previously, Jamila worked in Diane Von Furstenberg’s design house and as a designer and rep for Milford Design Studio. Jamila has since worked as Mad Imports' lead designer, collaborating with Malagasy artisans to create innovative collections.

Mad Imports’ products have been featured in several fashion publications including O, Domino, Lucky, Glamour, Cottage Living and in TV spots including E! News and the CBS early show. Mad Imports currently retails products through its online store and wholesales products to boutiques and specialty stores around the world.

We received the Calabash Tote from the Nairobi Collection. It is hand woven and dyed by Kenyan women using bark from the baobab tree. The tote is trimmed with embossed leather and has a leather flap closure. It measures 16” x 17" with double leather straps that drop 17". Its earthy colors come from the natural dyes used to create it. It retails for $95.

This is the second piece we have reviewed from Mad Imports. Our first review was in 2007, the Gigi Clutch in Ocean. As with the first review, this one receives high marks as well – the highest in fact. The tote is a chic, yet functional everyday bag with an exotic, bohemian flavor. It’s the perfect accessory for the stylish, on-the-go girl who dresses to the beat of her own drums.

The earthy colors provide a neutral undertone with a bang. The colors are vivid yet muted, absolutely gorgeous. It’s fabulous for fall although the warmer months would be perfect to tote this baby around as well.

The interior is not lined and has no pockets whatsoever, but it can carry an enormous amount of stuff. I carry a bunch of junk but this tote surprisingly has room for more! Apart from the gorgeous look, the feature I love the most about this bag is the number of ways in which you can carry it.

With the double straps, it’s a shoulder bag. Using the handle by the flap closure, it’s a hand bag. If I turn the double strap into a single strap, it’s a messenger bag. Pretty cool design if you ask me.

The best way to wear the bag hands down is with a dark pair of jeans like this Kasandra bootcut stretch jeans by Rock & Republic and a motocross crop leather jacket. Hippie chic!

As a socially responsible company, Mad Imports invests in several development efforts such as the funding of the education of the children of their weaver partners. They also work closely with the Akany Avoko orphanage to provide educational materials and support for special projects. Additionally, they developed a partnership with a community of women in Kenya, supporting their micro-enterprise and funding community development projects.

With the economy the way it is, shopping is probably not at the top of everyone’s list. But with a company like Mad Imports, it should be because through them, you end up helping those who are truly in need.

Handmade Crystal Glass Jewelry by Gala Glass, $135

So starting at the very young age of eleven, he began polishing his craft under the tutelage of Murano's great glassmakers. His younger brothers soon joined him in Murano’s glass workshops and many of them continue to practice the art to this day.

Now back to the review – starting with the pendant – a crystal glass that is fused with precious metal oxides in golds, reds, and blues. Hanging from a black cord, this piece is simply gorgeous. It’s a versatile necklace that goes glam with a skinny pair of jeans and this lime and slate blouse for a night out. Two other shapes and colors are available in this Dichroic Collection.

Onto the glass earrings which by the way is available in three shapes – rectangular, teardrop, and infinity. The combination of black, silver, and gold in this piece is very elegant and will totally dress up any outfit. It’s effortlessly chic and very light on the ears. I paired it up with a red dress like this one from Diane von Furstenberg and the coupling is absolute fabulousity.

Now the ring – in spiraling colors of red, black, and gold – trendy to the nth degree and oh so funky! It’s available in five other colors but this particular combination of red, black, and gold is chic-defined. It’s to-die-for with a sophisticated little black dress.

Violette Necklace and Carnivale Earrings in Amethyst and Onyx by Leibling Designs, $149

]]> Nurtured by a circle of creative women, Jessica Cripps grew up surrounded by creativity and innovation. With Jessica at the center of the circle and her mother, aunt, and grandmother on the rim, this group of women shared an enormous passion for handcrafting. With her mother loving to make beautiful, original objects d’art with her own hands, her aunt being a do-it-yourself interior decorator, and her grandmother being exceedingly talented at knitting, crocheting, and sewing, it is no surprise that a love for jewelry design developed in Jessica. This, and a desire to perfectly accessorize her outfits made her turn to creating her own pieces.

From the formal to the funky, Jessica’s trouble in finding anything on the market that pleased her, made it her mission to create special pieces for women across the world that have an eye for fashion and a desire to stand head and shoulders above the crowd.

It’s quite a tall order but after viewing her eclectic collection, I think she’s on her way to fulfilling that mission. What she offers is statement jewelry for unique people, jewelry with a unique flair where modern lines and old world sensibilities combine in spectacular pieces.

Her inspiration comes from mid century modern art and architecture, as well as nature and vintage fashion. Her label, Liebling Designs, is based in Minneapolis where she has been designing jewelry at her home studio for several years.

We received the Violette Necklace and the Carnivale Earrings in Amethyst and Onyx. The necklace is a double-stranded violet dyed kiwi agate with varying sizes of black onyx beads and a black onyx pendant. It has a sterling silver toggle clasp, measures 15.5” around, and retails for $120. The earring is a sterling silver wire hand-formed into hoops with violet amethyst and onyx beads. It dangles approximately 2” from the earlobe, measures 1” across, and retails for $29.

With the upcoming season being all about jewel tones, these pieces are absolutely perfect for fall. The craftsmanship on these pieces is outstanding, the quality superb, and the look striking. Black is always beautiful, but black with violet is stunning.

Starting off with the earrings, the pair is effortless chic defined. This piece can go from casual to glam in no time. It’s a sophisticated piece that has become a staple in my wardrobe. I love pairing it up with a neutral-tone dress like this slate matisse dress by Leyendecker. It provides a dramatic pop of color to what would otherwise be a colorless outfit.

The necklace is classically-styled, one that would not go out of fashion for years to come. One’s tendency might be to pair this up with a black tube top or dress. That’s nice but a bit predictable. My favorite way to wear this is with a white button down. Even better, I found this mock two piece shirtdress by Ralph Lauren that absolutely makes this necklace shine. With the white top, the black high waist pencil skirt, and the wide black patent belt, this necklace adds so much drama to an otherwise traditional work outfit. The violet agate is what makes this piece and the vibrancy that emanates from it.

Domo Clutch and Bloom Clutch by Rebecca Allen, $70

]]> Majoring in Accessory Design at the Ai Miami International University of Art and Design, Rebecca Allen has proven to be one to watch. In the ‘Best Student-Made Handbag’ category of the Independent Handbag Designer Awards of 2008, she was one of five finalists. A category for students who have successfully started their lines while still in school, Rebecca is poised to do more than that. Judging from her work, she is well positioned to generate a major following to it.

Inspired by established designers such as Prada, Betsey Johnson, Marc Jacobs, and Dior, Rebecca’s design philosophy for her label ‘Rebecca’ is to create pieces that rouse a person emotionally and offer a sense of whimsy and couture to each item she designs.

We received the Bloom Clutch and the Domo Clutch from Rebecca’s Fall Collection. Inspired by Sex and the City’s uber fashionista Carrie Bradshaw and her obsession with flower pins, the Bloom Clutch is a must-have for fall and retails for $32 (I’m not kidding). The Domo Clutch is more of a classic style in a gorgeous burnt orange hue and retails for $38 (no, that’s not a typo).

If you feel like jumping out now so you can buy for yourself, go ahead, I don’t blame you. I’ve had to exercise every ounce of control in order to stop myself from buying the entire collection in all available colors.

Made from burnt orange suede, the Domo Clutch features a magnetic clasp, hand dyed fabric lining, and a hand carved semi precious stone. It measures 9” x 5 ½” x 2” and is available in red and brown, with different stone embellishments.

This purse is exactly what I had expected, the product photo captured the coloration perfectly. Size-wise, it’s quite roomy. I can fit my blackberry, keys, and other small essentials with no problems. The burnt orange hue is just gorgeous. I love wearing it with a pair of bootcut jeans and an ivory silk blouse. With a neutral-color top such as ivory, this clutch provides a fabulous pop of color and totally completes an effortless look.

Onto the Bloom Clutch, it is made of chocolate brown suede featuring a magnetic clasp, hand dyed fabric lining, and a flower embellishment. It measures 11” x 8” x 3/4” and is available in lots of other colors.

This was a bit larger than what I expected which is a good thing because I love the height of this purse. The height and the style of the flap (along with the flower embellishment) make this purse really stand out. Width-wise, it’s not as roomy as the Domo Clutch but it is deeper. If you’re fashion-forward, you would totally love the flower. If you don’t care for it, Rebecca has a flower-less style that is available in four colors. I love this purse. I’d wear it everyday if I didn’t have to lug everything but the kitchen sink in my everyday bag, sack really. Since this is shorts weather, my favorite outfit to wear this with is a pair of cuffed shorts in porcelain and a feminine blouse that is about the same hue as the flower.

In cooler weather, these two clutches would be awesome with a pair of brown boots – can’t wait! Another thing I can’t wait for, new designs from Rebecca. I wonder what she’ll come up with for her Spring Collection? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

Espresso Swirl Sheath Style Apron and Tea Towel by The Hip Hostess, $51

]]> Getting ready to debut as a hostess, newly-married Andrea Rogers wanted a chic apron to wear. What to do when you can’t find one? Call mom, of course! What does mom do? Well if you’re Debbie Bertrand, sew up a few little numbers - obviously!

That’s how it all started for this Michigan-based mom. Isn’t that how it works for most successful startups? You create something out of your own want or need. As soon as you do, you discover others wanting the same thing. You create it for them and before you know it, you have a booming enterprise.

I host quite a bit. If it’s a small party, as in small enough for everyone to fit around the dinner table, I may actually endeavor to cook. Otherwise, I get someone else to do the endeavoring (aka catering). On a daily basis, I dabble here and there. I go for the 15-minute meals since I have found that 30-minute meals is a TV myth. It takes me at least an hour to do a 30-minute meal. Anyhow, I digress.

Whether I do a 15-minute or a too-many-minutes meal, one thing I always make sure of, is not to be seen wearing my apron. Why? Because it’s green with a chili recipe written on it.

Back to the booming enterprise, what Debbie created to fulfill her daughter’s need, filled a lot of other people’s needs as well. People like me.

So after much researching, designing, and brainstorming, ‘The Hip Hostess’ was born. Whether you make it, bake it, or fake it, the hip hostess has a line of aprons and tea towels that combine fresh fabrics with modern design and functional styling. Currently, sheath and demi style aprons are available in six fabulous fabrics. A line of matching little girl aprons is available as well.

We received the Espresso Swirl Sheath Style Apron along with a matching Espresso Swirl Tea Towel. The apron retails for $39 and the tea towel retails for $12.

This set arrived in style! The way it was packaged, it looked gift-ready. Any of their items would make for a wonderful present. Any of the aprons (big girls or little girls) or tea towels would make for not only functional, but stylish gifts. The meticulous attention to detail is evident is every aspect of the products. The quality is impeccable.

When I wore the apron over my tank and shorts, it looked like I was wearing a halter style summer dress. This is one apron you would not want to shove down your kitchen drawer. I certainly won't. The tea towel? Simply adorable! It’s chic and elegant – perfect for entertaining.

With a set like this, you’ve got to make sure the rest of your entertaining accoutrements match up to the same level of fabulousness. Check out this Brazilian Rosewood flatware set and antique white dishware collection with vintage-look ceramics, distressed edges, and scallop detailing. All together, they are too-die-for. You'd want to entertain all the time just so you can show them all off - aprons and all!

As stylish as the apron is, it’s also durable. Although it’s perfect for hosting, it’s also ideal for daily use. The fabric is cotton so it’s washable. You’ll get a lot of wear out of this little number. At $39, it is well worth the price. These aprons are hot so I suggest so get them while you can so you can bring out the hip hostess in you!

]]> Three women – a mother and two daughters who love quality shoes and colorful fabrics with intricate artistic work started An-Roz – an online boutique offering shoes handmade in Pakistan.

Based in Buffalo, New York, their boutique’s selection is a blend of eastern and western traditions - most are sandals with a handful of pumps. A few exhibit classic styles while most are bejeweled, party sandals in bright, black, or metallic colors. They remind me of Arabian Nights, of women fully decked out in jewels from head to toe.

We received the ‘Wise Sandals’ which retails for $104.99. It is a slip-on made with brown fabric, with a 3 ½” short-stacked heel and a braided toe strap adorned with clear rhinestones. The sandals came packaged with a signature silky purple dust cover.

Look-wise, the sandal is fabulously sexy. It’s perfect for the summer months, a great way to show off some legs and exquisitely pedicured toenails.

Comfort-wise, I found the strap to be a bit loose on me. I normally wear medium-width shoes. I adhered padding onto the strap and that fixed the looseness and also made sure that the strap didn’t rub on my toes.

The workmanship is fair with regards to the cosmetic factors such as glue marks and such, but the quality seems to be good in that everything has stayed intact – not a rhinestone out of place as of this writing. Speaking of which, the rhinestone work is beautiful - flashy but not gaudy. It has an elegance to it especially when worn at night - it's a head turner, the style elongates the legs and the braided straps show off gorgeously-pedicured toes.

Back to the fabulously-sexy look of this sandal, it is quite gorgeous when paired with a mini, bubble hem dress (got to show off those tanned legs) such as this tribal print puff sleeve dress by ABS. Another one to try is with a longer-length, halter type dress (showing off tanned shoulders this time) such as this twist neck print dress by Maggy London.

We received the Zing Necklace and the Silver Charm Earring Set from her Jewelry Collection.

The necklace is an Eni Oken-inspired pendant hanging from a sterling silver-plated cable chain. It features a large, flat, smooth lime turquoise green bead which has been wired using meters of hair-thin, silver artistic wire. Wired to the front is a silver butterfly charm and above and below are hot pink fossil beads. It retails for $85 NZD.

The earring set is an elongated, silver-plated kidney ear hook with 3 interchangable charms – oval discs, etched leaves, and butterflies. It retails for $29 NZD.

The first thing that struck me about these pieces is the price – unbelievably affordable! The second is how in person, they look exactly the same as in the photos – definitely well captured. In truth, the earrings look even better in person.

Worn together, they are gorgeous and totally perfect for the warm months – simple chic brightly defined. Of course, the butterfly charm earring matches perfectly with the butterfly on the focal bead of the necklace so that’s a fabulous pairing. However, the necklace works so well with the other charms as well.

I also found that I like wearing the necklace by itself or the earring by itself. You get a lot of mileage out of this combination. The earring by itself is 3-in-1!

For a designer with no formal training, the workmanship on these pieces is outstanding. I traveled with them, packed in a pouch along with a bunch of other jewelries, and thrown in my big shoulder bag banging with the rest of the junk I have in there. I didn’t think the earrings would hold up at all. I fully expected the hooks to be totally distorted by the end of my trip.

Remarkably, the earrings stood the test of travel abuse (with lots of connections nonetheless) – security checks and all. By the way, I loved wearing the necklace and earrings (together or by themselves) with brightly-printed day dresses like this Off Shoulder Silk Dress by Julie Brown and 'Barbara' Dress by Trina Turk.

Of course, these jewelries are one-of-a-kind so you won’t be able to purchase the same ones. However, there are plenty of others to choose from and with the price points they’re offered at, I’m sure you’ll find lots of pieces to add to your collection. With gas prices continuing to soar up, you’ll get more mileage out of getting items shipped to you, rather than spending gas money driving around boutiques looking for unique pieces to complement your summer wardrobe. Check Pallina Designs out, definitely worth a look or two!

Vintage Inspired Lace Headband by Angel Lust, $140

]]> Kristen is the designer behind Angel Lust, an accessories collection comprised of satin/lace bow headbands, barrettes, brooches, and bracelets. In the near future, she will be expanding to a clothing line as well.

This native New York designer is at the start of a very promising career and has already had her work featured on the uber popular television show Gossip Girl. Two characters, Jenny Humphrey and Hazel have sported the headbands in April episodes, with more to come in the new season to be shot in June 2008. If you’ve been living under a rock and have never heard of Gossip Girl, it’s a hit teen drama based on the popular novel series of the same name. It revolves around the lives of socialite young adults growing up on NY’s Upper East Side while dealing with sex, drugs, jealousy, and other teenage issues. Fashion is a huge part of this show and is therefore sometimes touted as Sex and the City for the younger generation.

Back to Kristen (the designer of the headbands, not the narrator of the show), she was also chosen among over 500 designers to showcase her headband collection in Henri Bendel, which includes French lace collaged pieces with Italian beads and Swarovski crystals and the now famous bow headbands worn on Gossip Girl. Her headband collection is sold in hip, young boutiques in NY as well as online.

We received the Vintage Inspired Lace Headband in Teal. This handcrafted satin ribbon with beaded studs and handcut French lace retails for $140.

With the headbands being handmade, each is slightly different from the next so it is truly an original piece.

The color of the satin in teal is just gorgeous and the black lace against it is striking. The studs in black, clear, and blue scattered about dress up the band a notch and the combination of all the aforementioned create a very feminine, vintage-looking piece that works well for casual as well as dressier styles.

Personally, I love it with a summer dress such as this sequin-trimmed bubble dress or this black tube dress. It gives both a fabulous punch of color and just a touch of dainty gracefulness and sophistication.

On the workmanship, it is handmade so you will see hand stitching in the back of the band. The lacework is delicate so if you use the band heavily, some of the edges might come off slightly which you can easily fix by re-gluing.

Other than that, if you’re a Gossip Girl fanatic and have been wishing to be led to where these headbands can be purchased from, you can thank your lucky stars because you’ve just been shown the way.

Follow the fashion all you want, but remember, always stay away from the bad stuff. Mellow your head out, stick a headband on it.

Oversized LOOK AT ME Bag by Onen Surono, $710

]]> Born in the island of Papua in Indonesia, Nenny Surono, better known by her nickname Onen, has always admired the beauty of her natural surroundings. Early on, her parents recognized her artistic abilities and enrolled her in one form of art class or another.

Fast forward to her college years and the art classes stopped when Nenny was unable to go to Art College. Reluctantly, she followed her parent’s advise to enter Law School. From there, she went to Switzerland for a post-graduate degree in management. Europe re-awakened her interest in the arts.

Following Europe in her pursuit of continuing education is the United States where she traveled extensively and became acutely aware of how people dressed and accessorized. This stirred up artful memories of her hometown and eventually she listened to the call to go back home and create art.

In 2002, Nenny returned to Indonesia where she now has a studio producing collections for her label ‘Onen Surono’. Her lines include jewelry, bags, shoes, accessories, and tees. Her studio does not mass produce as she values the quality and exclusivity of the pieces she designs.

We received the oversized LOOK AT ME bag from Onen Surono’s Fall/Winter 2008 Bag Collection. The exterior is made of snakeskin leather and the interior lining is suede goat leather. It retails for $710 and includes a signature black dust bag.

This is a portfolio bag that measures 24” x 16” x 4”. Bar none, this is the chic-est and hippest portfolio case I have ever come across. The salt and pepper coloration of the snakeskin in combination with a tinge of orange is a fabulous fusion. It’s actually quite interesting that art cases out there are so plain and boring, being that they are used by creative professionals. You’d think there would be loads of funky portfolio bags available in the market, but not so.

If you’ve been looking for a stylish alternative to your boring black, brown, or gray leather portfolio bag, your search has just ended. You will not find anything remotely fashionable out there, I know because I've looked.

If you’re a newbie artsy professional in pursuit of your dreams, you definitely need a bag like this in your arsenal. Imagine walking into an interview toting this snakeskin bag and pulling your work out of it. Quite an impact you’d make that’ll leave a lasting impression, I dare say. Of course, you will need to dress the part as well. A couple of modish outfit options that’ll complement the bag would be a slightly shimmery sharkskin jacket or a trendy cap-sleeve pinstripe one.

This is the second item we’ve reviewed from Onen Surono. The first one was the cuff and ring set from the Butterfly Jewelry Collection. As with the jewelry review, this one does not disappoint. In fact, we always look forward to what Onen Surono comes up with next. Maybe shoes and tees? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Whatever is coming next, one thing will be for sure – it will be bold, it will be hip, and it will be chic!

Swarovski Crystal Eyelet Bracelet and Earrings by Judith Goldstone Designs, $108

]]> With the impossibility of wearing all the jewelry she wants to create, the only logical solution was to offer them to the public. In 2005, Judith Goldstone began creating distinctive, handcrafted pieces for the customers of her bridal boutique Picker’s. After selling the boutique in the Fall of 2007, she recognized that jewelry-creation was in her blood. It was an endeavor she wanted to continue pursuing and so in October 2007, Judith Goldstone Designs was born. A month later, her web site was launched.

With no formal training, Judi’s talent is intuitive and inherited from a very artistic family, with many relatives having been recognized for their talents in the areas of art, theater, and music.

She works mostly with Swarovski crystals, freshwater pearls, semi-precious and precious stones. She accepts special orders for changes in color, size, or for one-of-a-kind creations. Each piece has a signature hand-wrapped bead of brown goldstone with gold flecks and all orders are gift-ready, delivered in a gold organza drawstring pouch.

Judi’s creations are available in retail stores, in the gift gallery of acclaimed museum Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute, and online. Price points range from $30 to $200.

We received the Swarovski Crystal Eyelet Bracelet and its matching earrings. The bracelet is created with three different shapes of black, copper and topaz crystals – bicone, helix and rondelles. Its length is 7” and retails for $79. The earring is made of the same crystals on a gold chain. Its length is 1.5” and retails for $29.

The first thing I noticed when I opened this package is the sparkle emanating from both pieces, they truly shimmered.

Starting off with the bracelet, the design and color combination is simple and classic - a piece that can be worn in any season. With the basic colors of black, copper, and topaz, it’s also a piece that can be worn with just about anything. It will go with casuals such as shorts and jeans, and with dressier options such as business suits and little black dresses.

One thing I was weary about is the toggle closure. We previously reviewed a bracelet with the same type of closure that ended up getting undone unbeknownst to the reviewer, and getting lost in the process. The problem with the toggle portion of that bracelet was that it was too short. Upon inspecting this bracelet, the length of the toggle is long and I am happy to say that with all the moving around I did, the bracelet stayed closed and firmly around my wrist!

Moving onto the earrings, the length is perfect at 1.5”. It’s large enough to be noticed but small enough to be worn to the office. I love the movement of the beads, it creates even more sparkle as light hits the different shades and shapes of the crystals. It's great to find a pair of earrings that looks professional for work, and at the same time dressy enough for a night out afterwards.

As a set, I love to wear them with basic black. Even though they go with just about any outfit, I think that they look the best complementing a gorgeous little black dress, or a trendy short-sleeve pinstripe suit.

At $108 for the set, it’s super affordable and if you haven’t found a gift for mom yet, this would definitely make for a lovely present.

We received the Spring Green Chain Necklace and Earring Ensemble from the label’s Spring Collection. The necklace is made of mother of pearl discs with yellow turquoise and green and dark blue variegated beads on a 48” gold chain. The earring is made of variegated green beads on French wire. The ensemble retails for $195 and comes packaged in a gorgeous black leatherette gift box.

Two words – absolutely stunning! This ensemble took my breath away, a definite love at first sight. It started with the packaging. The black leatherette gift box is impressive, large in size and sophisticated in style. It’s an elegant touch that added to the anticipation of opening to see what’s inside. Well, what is inside is a sparkling vision of stones and beads in gorgeous spring colors mixed with gold.

I received this set after returning from a trip to Europe where it was cold and wet. How delightful to return to Southern California where it is warm and dry, and be welcomed by fabulous spring jewelry. I did not waste any time matching the ensemble up with my spring wardrobe.

Wearing the necklace long, it is super chic with a white strapless sheath dress. Wearing the necklace as a choker with multiple layers, it’s the perfect match up to an off-the-shoulder, silk floral dress with layered ruffles. This 48” long necklace with a lobster clasp closure is unbelievably versatile. Not only can it be worn as a necklace in more ways than I can remember, it can also be worn as a belt. It’s a great way to dress up a pair of jeans and a plain tank top. Add the earrings and a pair of heels, and you’re good for a night out on the town.

Construction-wise, both pieces are extremely well made. The craftsmanship is superb and the materials of good quality, definitely worth the money.

Of course this set is one-of-a-kind so you won’t be able to get the same one but this set is only one of many amazing pieces available from the line's extensive collection. If you’re looking for a mother’s day gift, I would highly recommend any set from the ensemble collection. Your mom will love you forever, receiving something that no other woman can have, a gift as individual and special as she is. You can even keep the earrings, the necklace stands on its own. Even better though, get another set for yourself, one that represents your own individuality. Then swap the earrings – you keep the earrings in your mom’s set and give your mom the earring in your set – this way, you and your mom can have a piece of the other’s identity, now if that’s not a great gift, I don’t know what is!

Mariners Dream Sea Glass Earrings by Out Of The Blue Seaglass Jewelry, $68

]]> Inspired by nature and the cultures of ancient and primitive people who lived by the sea, Lisl Armstrong has been making sea glass jewelry for over twenty years. She has always loved objects from antiquity, not just for their craftsmanship and natural materials but for what the elements have done to them over the years.

Lisl started making sea glass jewelry in the Caribbean on the island of Puerto Rico, where she first discovered sea glass. She has collected over 100,000 pieces in Puerto Rico where her label ‘Out Of The Blue Seaglass Jewelry’ originated in 1987.

Now based in Englewood Florida and the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Lisl’s collection uses sea glass not only from Puerto Rico but from all over the world - Costa Rica, Bali, Italy, England, and Hawaii. She also uses sea glass from the Outer Banks and from the Pacific Northwest.

Using precious metal wires such as sterling silver and copper, the wire working methods she uses in her creations were developed by ancient nomadic people who made jewelry with a few basic tools such as pliers, cutters and hammers. The result is jewelry that is truly handmade bearing a few gentle tool marks, in keeping with the organic look of sea glass.

Each piece in her collection is unique and other than a drill hole, the sea glass is as found on the beach – no cutting, tumbling, coloring, or shaping. It is natural sea glass, broken glass worn smooth only by the sea. Sharp edges softened as the glass tumbles over rocks and further smoothed and frosted as the tides drag it along the sandy ocean floor.

We received the Mariners Dream Sea Glass Earrings from the Kelly Greens, Sea Foam, and Lime Greens Collection. It is made of olive green sea glass found on the beaches of Puerto Rico, paired with Swarovski crystal beads. It retails for $68.

It is quite amazing to review a piece of jewelry made from broken glass that washed up from the sea. It’s kind of romantic actually, thinking of where the glass came from originally, where it has been, and what it has seen. All sorts of images conjure up in my mind that I forget that I’m supposed to be wearing it, rather than staring at it while stories play up in my head.

So, even better, I wear it and conjure up stories with other people who notice it. It’s a great conversation piece, what can I say!

I haven’t a clue how old the glass is but I’m assuming it’s ancient. What’s great is how an antique piece such as this can look so modern and up-to-date, even trendy if I dare say. With green being so hot this season, this piece is perfect for following the trend but in your own way.

The bright shade of green is all the rage. If you want to stand out from the crowd, choose a slightly different shade like this one which is more on the olive side of green. It’s absolutely fabulous with a bright batik yellow maxi dress (another rage) or a yellow cross back hankie hem dress. If you’re not into green, no worries. Lisl has an impressive collection of blues, reds, ambers, whites, and other shades in between, so check them out and enjoy conjuring up sea glass stories in your head and with others!
