A writer and journalist, Vanessa Lee nurtured her passion for Chinese art, philosophy, and spirituality as well as awareness of societal issues, when she began her life-long pursuit of a better world in Taiwan. Immediately after receiving her degree in journalism, she lived amongst Taiwanese aborigines and wrote about their unjust living conditions. During her eventful pursuits, the constants in her life were her fascination in art and devotion to living a spiritual life.
Lee immigrated to the United States in 1984, where she continued her artistic and spiritual passions. Her daughter Vania and son Alvin, joined Lee in founding Wishgiving in 2006. From an early age, the two siblings admired their mother’s spiritual dedication to better the world, and were inspired by her artistic pursuits.
An English major at the University of California Berkeley who also pursued design classes at Art Center, Vania contributes a Western vision to her mother’s Eastern background to develop a line of jewelry and accessories that is truly an East-West fusion.
Alvin lends his expertise in technology to Wishgiving through web and technical developments.

We received the Base Chakra Mahogany Hoop Earrings from them. It is made of unique, hand-cut mahogany obsidian stones that drop from black sterling silver hoops. It retails for $120.
This gorgeous pair of earrings arrived in a Wishgiving signature black jewelry box. I adored it from the moment I opened the box. The color of the mahogany obsidian is a beautiful reddish brown with black flecks. The black hoops are the perfect complement to the stones as they pick up on the flecks beautifully.
The irregular shape of the glossy stones lends a very chic edge to this otherwise simple creation. That along with the texture and color brings up this piece from simple to super stylish. I can wear it down with a casual jeans outfit or pump it up with a sexy little black number and a matching patent leather clutch.
I also like the size of the hoops. At 1 ¼” long, it is just the right size – not too small to be noticed and not too large to be overpowering. I tweaked the hoop closure a little bit so it snaps more securely. I heart this piece so much, I want to take all precautions to make sure I don’t lose it.
Now, if you were paying close attention to the name of this earring, you would have noticed 'Base Chakra' in it. The idea of chakras stems from thousands of years of Chinese and Indian energy healing. Our bodies have seven main chakras, or energy centers. The goal of wearing chakra jewelry or pursuing color therapy is to find the balance of all seven chakras. The base or root chakra is associated with self awareness, survival instincts and stability in your place on earth. The mahogany obsidian on the other hand, is considered to be a stone of protection, honesty and insight.
