"A Moment" Necklace by L Designs, $46
Laura Morgan’s love of art and design began at a young age. It’s no wonder that years later, she turned to this love when she needed a diversion from the long hours and frequent travels of her high-stress corporate job.
This need for diversion led her to explore jewelry design. Before long, the exploration was transformed into passion, which evolved into a lifestyle when she left the corporate world and founded L Designs by Laura Morgan. Based in Austin, Texas, her designs are influenced by her childhood love of art and design, nature, and travel.
At the age of seven, Laura was already taking painting classes. Growing up, she looked forward to trips to the library for it meant hours with architecture and landscape design books. These childhood influences are apparent in the characteristic sculptural details of her designs.
Her appreciation of nature and affinity for travel translate into organic shapes and a globally-inspired color pallet. She is inspired by the sense of movement, the spirit of a favorite place, or the emotion evoked by metal and stone.
From her studio, she translates all her inspirations into handmade works of art. In her spare time, her four dogs, two cats, and wonderfully supportive husband keep her busy and always amused. She travels regularly between her Austin home and the mountains of North Carolina where she grew up. The mountains remind her who she is and provide her renewed purpose when she needs to be rejuvenated and inspired to continue to design jewelry that is the medium by which she can share both a story and a passion with the wearer.
We received the “A Moment” Necklace from the Sedona Sands Collection. It has a sterling silver clasp and chain that is adjustable from 15 to 18 inches. It is accented by a hand-sculpted and hand-textured sterling silver square with rectangular turquoise beads. It retails for $46.
What an exquisitely delicate necklace! The textured sterling square measures about ¾ of an inch and is quite dainty. The turquoise accents add a cool pop of color that is perfect for spring and summer. The chain is so delicate, it almost disappears against the skin when you wear it. In the back, the chain is anchored on either side of the clasp by two small crystal beads. It is such a nice touch to have these beads in the back and it shows the designer’s meticulous attention to detail.
The piece is well crafted. Its beauty is effortless in its simplicity. The design is modern yet it’s classic. I can see myself wearing this piece for years to come.
It’s particularly easy to wear. I’m hard pressed to find an outfit it doesn’t go well with. It’s almost chameleon-like in its ability to change its feel based on what you wear with it. For the office, its quiet elegance is well suited for the business scene – professional and tasteful. For the weekend, it takes on a casual, carefree mood when worn with a pair of jeans and a tank top.
